Derrick Rose just dropped 39 points on the Pacers in his first playoff game of 2011, singlehandedly willing the Bulls to a 104-99 come-from-behind victory over the Pacers. Twitter, of course, exploded. And rightfully so; Derrick Rose is performing at a level few people have ever seen, and he is a few weeks away from winning his first regular season MVP.
I still have my doubts about the Bulls as Finals contenders for the following reason: all of the greatest champions had a second superstar alongside them. Russell had Cousy. Jordan had Pippen. Olajuwon had Drexler. Shaq had Kobe, then he had Wade. Duncan had Parker. Kobe has Gasol. Derrick Rose has...Luol Deng? Joakim Noah? Carlos Boozer? No, no, and no. If the Bulls win the championship this year, Derrick Rose will have done something Jordan never did. He will have done something Kobe never did.
Now, I still feel like in a 7 game series, Miami and Boston both have too much talent and experience for Chicago this year. I think the Eastern Conference semifinals are going to decide who represents the East in the NBA Finals. But that's what makes the Bulls so amazing: they are competing against some incredible talent, and they have the best record in the East.
The Bulls are a contender. And you tell me, because I don't feel like I know the answer to this question: if the Bulls win the championship, what does that mean about Derrick Rose?
